Little Portugal's Victory Lap
(Or why you have to love Montreal, volume 894)
Portugal beat Iran 2-0 in Germany this morning to advance to the second round of the Fifa World Cup - a round that Portuguese players and fans haven't seen since 1966.
So it was sort of a big deal.
And if you were anywhere in the vicinity of St. Urbain Street, you knew about it. All about it. The victory lap started late morning, around 11, and hasn't yet stopped. A cacophony of horns sounded. A parade stretching from St. Viateur south to Rachel, cars draped in flags and banners. And they were out on foot, too, hollering and awash in the Portuguese red and green.
There was pride. There was a lot of pride.
And we're only starting round two.
Parabéns!
