For those keepin' score...
It looks like I'm off to our fair national capital this summer (that's Ottawa for you yankees).
Yep, it seems somebody thinks I can write -- and they're gonna pay me for it!
I'm gonna be a full-time city/parliamentary/young adult lifestyle reporter at the Ottawa Citizen. No, I can't believe it either.

My dear friend Kate Vogel, in the trenches of Nashua, NH this weekend, reports that spirits among Dean supporters remain unwaivering in spite of recent campaign falters (read: Iowa).
Governor Dean was actually in Nashua today, shaking hands with United Auto Workers supporters.
And, on another Dean note... I was not impressed with his and wife Judy's Diane Sawyer tete-a-tete the other night. I understand that the woman is shy, but if I were to make a call based on that showing alone, I'd say that she is lacking a personality. In her defense though, Sawyer was not in fine form. Her questions were too pointed and repetitive -- failing entirely to move beyond Dean's barbarian yawp. Hello, let's get over it, people. Frankly, writing Dean off for that is even more ridiculous than the infamous Muskie "crying" episode.

My buddy Tom Regan's brother Jim describes some new sites that will dissect all the news that is fit (and unfit) to print during the Presidential campaign. Check out the article in today's CS Monitor...

1984?
Ottawa Citizen reporter Juliet O'Neill faced the wrath of our boys in red yesterday when the Mounties raided her home and her Citizen cubicle for evidence of having attained and printed leaked information on the Maher Arar case. I tend to agree that this marks a blemish on the face of freedom of the press. The Citizen's Editor-I-C came to O'Neill's defense, accusing the action as "smacking of a police state."

They played Mariah Carey's "Emotions" on Q92 this afternoon... and I have to say that, shockingly, it has withstood the test of time.

The State of our Union is... well... let's pretend.
I cannot believe it's been an entire year since we first heard that Sadaam Hussein was acquiring uranium in Africa. Oh, how far we haven't come.

We finally heard from Belinda Stronach this morning, confirming the endless rumblings that she is in fact seeking the leadership of the Conservative Party. Stronach resigned her position as head of Magna International just before the splashy press conference from Aurora, Ontario.
Stronach underlined "honesty, compassion, fairness, respect and integrity," as her primary objectives. She labeled these values, and the issues she hopes to raise as, "motherhood issues".
Nothin' I like more than a compassionate Conservative. Look how well the one in the White House is doing.
Word on the street is that the king of Forden Crescent, Brian Muldoon himself, has been burning up the phone lines on Stronach's behalf.

Is winning the Iowa Caucus an indication of who will win the presidency?
Why not ask Presidents McGovern, Gephardt, Dole and Mondale?

Dean gets duked...
Who woulda guessed that the Jr. Senator (and I use the term Jr. loosely) from Massachusetts would be Iowa's comeback kid? John Kerry sweeps the midwest, with only lil' John Edwards eating his dust. Poor Governor Dean couldn't even taste Kerry's dust, that's how far behind he was.
And then of course there's Missouri's own Dick Gephardt. But nobody's sad about that.

A little backgrounder...
I'm a first-year law student at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. A self-professed news and media junkie since I still velcroed my sneakers, my academic career has centered on politics, history, journalism, and now, the law.
I am a proud alumna of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, and Dawson College in Montreal.
Section 2, my blog's namesake, is a reference to Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) that entrenches our constitutional right to free expression and a free press.

My arrival on the blogging scene is now official!
After a long period of contemplation, I've opted to make Blogspot my new online residence. I plan to use this space for news items that are fascinating, irreverent, quirky and relevant. Well, I guess those are all subjective classifications... Ok, so many of my posts may turn out mundane, hyper-political and irrelevant. But that is my prerogative as mistress of my domain. ;)
So hang tight as I acclimate to these new surroundings. I promise new and regular posts very shortly!
